Youth update for St. Luke's Youth

We hope everyone had a fantastic Thanksgiving.

We had an awesome time at Druid Hills Night Shelter, Journey, Sunday night. Thanks to all of you who came and helped. One of the residents said it was really great to see all of you and wanted to thank you for your energy, great conversations, and games.

This week is a little different too:

1. Toys for Tots--be at church at 6:30 to help gather and pack all the toys people will bring for the concert. After we get done packing the toys we will have dessert and hang out until 8:00, or you are welcome to head into the concert too. It's an easy night of service and helps a lot.

2. Movie Night--December 9th at church. 5:00-7:00 come straight up stairs when you get to church.

3. Youth Christmas Parties--December 16th, check the bulletin insert by clicking here for all the details.

4. Tartan Trot!! It's time to get rolling with some Tartan Trot things. One of the best ways we get runners at our race is to go to other races and hand out registration forms. This is an easy way to help and can bring in a lot of runners. We have picked out two races where we want to hand out fliers. If you are available on the following Saturday Mornings let Phil know. December 15th--Peachtree corners Christmas run and January 21st the MLK run at Piedmont Park. If you can go to either please let me know.

5. Youth Babysitting to raise funds for Tartan Trot: On Sunday the 23rd the youth will babysit for families who have some last minute christmas things to do 1:30-4:30pm. If you are going on a trip this summer you need to plan on being at church to help. Are there any adults who can help as well? We will play with kids and have some fun. This is an important way to help raise money for the Tartan Trot!

Don't forget to check the bulletin insert for all the advent and Christmas things happening around church.

As always, if you have any questions comments or concerns please let me know.

Youth update for October 14

Hey all, I don't have much for the update this week. There have been some detailed emails sent out this week regarding upcoming events. For the most part our week to week schedule is off and running. A few reminders:
1. Sunday School 9:30-10:30, Sunday evenings 5:00-7:00pm
2. Middle School Retreat, October 26-27th, sleep at church. We need some parent help with transportation to and from bowling on friday night, chaperoning, breakfast in the morning, and transportation to and from our service project on Sat morning. If you can help with this please let Phil know ASAP. If you can stay the night with us I'll make sure you get a couch spot :)
3. Modern Christian Family on the 21st of October. Brittany sent you an email about that event. Please make sure you register for the event. More information about the event here. Information specific to St. Luke's here

This Sunday night we are having a service project night. We will be serving the world and God's creation. We are going to be learning about an organization that trains service dogs here in GA, making treats/toys for the dogs. Also, we will be working on fall gifts for St. Luke's folks who can't get out and about. Come for a great night of service and love. The organization we are learning about is at http://www.canineassistants.org

As always, if you have any questions, comments or concerns please let me know.

Modern Christian Family, October 21 - Youth & Families

Youth Group on October 21 is ...

Modern Christian Family
On October 21, instead of traditional St. Luke's youth group, Youth Groups and Families from several Atlanta Presbyterian Churches will be gathering for the first of three AWESOME events.  This is sponsored by Montreat Conference Center and 9 churches around Atlanta, including St. Luke's!
~Youth
will gather for games, energizers, and an activity about hunger.  It's a fun time for our youth group to meet and hang out with lots of other teenagers & their youth groups.
~Parents and Caregivers will explore why teen brains are ruled by emotions and adults by logic; pinpoint how to help your teen thrive during a time of complex neural development; and discover how you and your youth can improve communications and open channels for feedback. This portion is led by Dr. Rodger Nishioka, the Benton Family Associate Professor of Christian Education at Columbia Theological Seminary.
~Younger Kids in your Family will have childcare provided that is safe and fun!

IMPORTANT DETAILS in order to ATTEND:
Families need to meet at Trinity Presbyterian Church (3003 Howell Mill Road Northwest  Atlanta, GA 30327) and arrive by 6:00 p.m.  There are no other youth group programs this evening at St. Luke's, so please try to attend this event.  Unlike our usual youth nights, there is no dinner so eat first or on your way. This event is one of three events offered this year. You must Register for these events and there is a cost ($20 for each family for each event, or all three for $45, and let us know if you need help with this cost), CLICK HERE TO REGISTER. At this event there is a canned/dried food drive for Atlanta Community Food Bank, so try to bring a food item or 10 to donate.

Do you love this idea so much you want to volunteer?  This event needs a few parents to help with setup, parking, etc at 5:30 p.m.  Email Phil if you are interested philbrown@slpres.org.  OR are you a youth elder and want to serve communion at this event?  Perfect, email Phil.

All of this is to offer a holistic model of youth and families ministry. Our youth programs are great places and experiences for your youth's faith formation, but we get them only a couple hours a week. So families have the most time together for faith formation, and this program is to support your family as you raise teens in the Christian faith. So come, join other parents and teens going through similar times.

This message is brought to you by
Brittany & Phil

Did you just skim this? Recap: You need to know Youth Group is at Trinity Presbyterian Church, Atlanta, on October 21. You must Register and pay as a family, and parents are asked to come and participate.

Final full day on the mountain

Hey all, another great day on the mountain. We had half day projects or a half day with the day campers. We spent the afternoon with our yrg's celebrating our week together. Gifts galore were shared as we reflected on the amazing things God had done in our midst.

The evening was filled with a campfire, worship, and fish-hook ceremony.

Tomorrow we will say our goodbyes and head back down the mountain to Atlanta. We have a gas stop and lunch to grab on our way home. We should return around 3:30. We will call when we are about an hour out.

Please, do not leave the st Luke's parking lot until we have all the vehicles unloaded, cleaned out, everything inside, and we have said good bye and know you are gone.

We've had a great week!

Sunday morning, if you can make it to worship, have your youth wear their name tags and/any mt top shirts they got while here. Have them come ready to talk with people about all the good things God has done here on the mountain.

Thanks for your prayers and support to get us to camp. Lives are being changed up here.

God had done awesome stuff here.

If you have any questions or concerns while we are on the road please feel free to call me. 970-215-9041

Grace and peace,

Phil

Thursday on the mountain.

Another great day on the mountain. All are doing well and having a great time. Tonight at worship our yrg's (small groups) made worship stations for our major groups (larger small group). The yrg's reflected on the changes they have seen and what has impacted them about Gods amazing love.

Tomorrow we have half day projects, day camp celebrations, and yrg celebrations.

Our week on the mountain will end too fast. Gods doing some awesome stuff up here.

Grace and peace,

Phil

Wednesday at mountain top.

Hey everyone, well it's hum day up here, "halfway up the mountain." it's a day filled with crazy attire, fun times and some wacky costumes. Buddy the elf even showed up! We are having a great time serving and sharing up here. We might even be getting to know God a little better too.

Service project finished up their two day projects and day camp split between hiking, community service projects, eating lunch with day camp families, and learning about a therapy riding center up here on the mountain.

Another great day on the mountain! Everyone seems to be enjoying time in this life-changing community!

Grace and peace.

Phil
P.s. I can't post pics yet because I don't have great service. Working on wifi for tomorrow.

Day two at Mt. Top

Well we finished our first day of work at mt top. Some of us worked on porches, cleared overgrown yards, and others of us painted. Some of us even got to know 25 young kids in day camp. Out lives and the lives of the people in grundy county are changing. Tonight at camp we played ships and sailors, worshiped at "three crosses" and shared about each of our days with camp. This place is amazing!

Our youth are doing great, participating well and having a great time. We are excited to see you all when we return.

Grace and peace,

Phil

We made it to mountain top

Hey everyone we made it to mountain top just fine. Had a safe and uneventful trip up. All is well in camp. Today we broke into our small groups (yrg's) and started to get ready for tomorrow when the real work begins. Great friendships are being made and rekindled. Service is lacking here so I won't be able to post to Facebook as planned.

Big announcement for youth ministry at St. Luke's

Hey everyone,
Hope you all are doing well and having a great week. Here's what's coming up for youth ministry at St. Luke's:
Sunday night: Parent and youth connect. Parents come for some time together to talk about school life and academics. Our focus will be around school life and your teenager. It will be a great chance to connect with other parents of teenagers as well. 5:30-7:30pm dinner included.

This weekend the confirmation class will be on their retreat. Please keep us in your prayers as they travel and have a great time in the mountains outside of Blairsville, GA.

Big announcement: We are changing the schedule for Sunday nights. We have noticed a need to separate middle schoolers and high schoolers. Each group has their own needs and we want to be responsible about serving each group faithfully. The youth council has talked about this and we have decided to move to the following schedule for Sunday nights starting Sunday March 4 (not this weekend but the following):
5:30-6:30pm middle schoolers only fun times and program
6:30-7:00pm everyone (middle school and high school together) eats dinner
7:00-8:00pm high schoolers only fun times and program

A few of Logistic details about this:
If you are a high schooler who sings in the choir: come to rehearsal, then you can stay in a room and study for an hour or go and come back. But you are welcome to stick around and work on homework and what not, we just need to know if you are here.
Siblings who are in high school and middle school: There are a few options here, that we will have to figure out as we go along. We can work on a car pool list to help, or a younger sibling could possible stay to work on homework after dinner, but supervision thing would have to come into play as well. We can talk it through if this is an issue in your family.
Dinner will be at 6:30 now.
Please help us spread the word about this.

Remember:
This is a transition into something we haven't done before (at least while Phil has been here). There will be some bumps in the road. Please let me know what comes up. Open communication will be key in all of this, like everything else. We hope it helps each group solidify and grow. We feel we can serve each group better by separating them to address things of faith differently.

As always, if you have any questions, please let me know.

Grace and Peace,
Phil Brown

Tartan Trot help this week

Liz, will you send this out first thing Monday morning. Thanks.

Hey everyone,
Tartan Trot is here. If you have some time this week to help please come by church, even if it's for just a few minutes that can make a world of difference.
Here are some specific projects we need help with.
`1. due to weather Sunday and Monday morning, we need some help for about 2 hours putting notes on people's mail boxes for the 5k race alerting them to their street being closed on Saturday morning. This goes a long way for the PR of the event and hoping people do not get too mad at us. If you can do this Monday afternoon or Tuesday sometime Phil will help you and have everything just need a few more bodies to do this.
2. Tuesday Night is Race bag packing night. we have over 1300 race bags to pack for our runners. come by church from 5-8 and help us pack, come for 30 min, 1 hr, or the whole time. The more hands on this project the better.
3. Cakes and Pies, continue to bake your cakes and pies for all the running world to enjoy. Bring them by church anytime on Thursday or Friday.

I'm sure there will be plenty more to do, if you have a few minutes this week please let us know you can help.

Grace and Peace,
Phil Brown
